Chewy sells pet food, and through CarePlus it also sells pet insurance, but not its own. CarePlus is a marketplace: the plans on its shelf have come from insurers including Lemonade and Trupanion, and the insurer you choose is the company covering your pet. Verify the current lineup when you buy, because a marketplace shelf can change.
That structure makes this review different from our insurer reviews. There is no single Chewy policy to map, no Chewy waiting period, and no Chewy claims department; each question routes to the issuing insurer. Both insurers reported in the lineup are ranked partners here, with full reviews and dated score cards of their own.
Here is the disclosure that shapes this page. Our ranking is built on dated, identical-profile quotes from 11 partners, and Chewy sits outside that panel because it is a storefront rather than an insurer. The insurers on its reported shelf are in the panel, which is where the scoring happens.
Disclosure: We earn a commission when you buy through our links. You pay the same state-filed rate as buying direct, and commissions never change a score. How we collect and score quotes.
Pricing
How much does Chewy cost?
We publish no Chewy price because there is no Chewy policy to price. The dated samples for Lemonade and Trupanion appear in their own reviews, and across our runs those two sit at opposite ends: Lemonade has priced lowest of our 11 and Trupanion highest.
Rates in US pet insurance come from state filings, so a policy is not supposed to cost more through one storefront than another; run the CarePlus quote against the insurer's direct quote to confirm. Cat premiums run 35 to 40 percent below dog premiums across the market, whichever door you enter through.
The Coverage Map
What Chewy covers (and what it excludes)
The Coverage Map below cannot carry one answer for Chewy, because every row depends on which insurer's plan you buy through CarePlus. Each row is marked varies, and the issuing insurer's review on this site holds the row-by-row answers.
| Item | Status | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Accidents | Varies by plan | Follows the issuing insurer's plan |
| Illnesses | Varies by plan | Follows the issuing insurer's plan |
| Hereditary and congenital conditions | Varies by plan | Terms differ by issuing insurer |
| Chronic conditions | Varies by plan | Terms differ by issuing insurer |
| Dental illness | Varies by plan | Terms differ by issuing insurer |
| Routine dental cleaning | Varies by plan | Wellness scope differs by insurer |
| Exam and consultation fees | Varies by plan | Included, add-on, or pending by insurer |
| Prescription medications | Varies by plan | Follows the issuing insurer's plan |
| Prescription food and supplements | Varies by plan | Terms differ by issuing insurer |
| Behavioral therapy | Varies by plan | Terms differ by issuing insurer |
| Alternative therapy | Varies by plan | Terms differ by issuing insurer |
| Spay and neuter | Varies by plan | Trupanion sells no preventative coverage |
| Vaccinations | Varies by plan | Trupanion sells no preventative coverage |
| Wellness add-on available | Varies by plan | Lemonade sells preventative tiers; Trupanion sells none |
Reading this map is simple once the model clicks: pick the insurer first, then read that insurer's own map. Our Lemonade review shows a lean base policy with add-ons; our Trupanion review shows a wider base policy with no preventative coverage at all. CarePlus does not blend them; it hands you one or the other, so verify which insurers are on the shelf when you buy.
The clock
What are Chewy's waiting periods and limits?
| Accident waiting period | Set by the issuing insurer; pending verification |
| Illness waiting period | Set by the issuing insurer; pending verification |
| Orthopedic conditions | Set by the issuing insurer; pending verification |
There is no Chewy waiting period; the day-counts come from the insurer whose plan you buy. Accident waits across the US market run about 1 to 15 days and illness waits about 14 to 30 days. Symptoms during any waiting period count as pre-existing afterward, so verify the dates on your policy documents at checkout.
Expect the standard US pre-existing exclusion from any insurer on the shelf: conditions with symptoms or a diagnosis before enrollment, or during waiting periods, are not covered. The structural differences are the real fine print. Lemonade uses an annual deductible that resets each policy year, while Trupanion uses a per-condition deductible paid once per condition. That one difference changes the lifetime math of a chronic diagnosis more than any storefront can.
Claims
How do Chewy claims actually work?
Claims never touch Chewy: you file with the insurer that issued your policy. On the reported lineup that means Lemonade's app flow, where simple claims are often approved within minutes, or Trupanion's model, which can settle the covered share at checkout in participating clinics through Vet Direct Pay.
First claims take longer everywhere because the insurer reviews your pet's full vet records. That rule follows the insurer, not the store.
The carrier
Who underwrites Chewy?
Chewy is a retailer, and CarePlus is its insurance storefront; the underwriter is whichever carrier stands behind the plan you choose. Lemonade underwrites through Lemonade Insurance Company, and Trupanion underwrites through American Pet Insurance Company. The carrier named in your policy documents is the binding answer, and the lineup at purchase is worth verifying because marketplace shelves change.
What makes it different
What a marketplace layer is for
The fair question about any insurance storefront is what the layer adds. The convenience is real: owners already buying food and medications on Chewy meet insurance mid-shop, in an account they already trust. What the layer does not add is coverage, because the policy text, waiting periods, and claims process all come from the issuing insurer. The limit is structural too: a shelf holding a small lineup shows you that lineup, not the market. Our score cards compare 11 insurers side by side, which is the comparison a two-insurer shelf cannot run.
Fit Verdict
Should you buy Chewy pet insurance?
Pick Chewy for an owner already shopping on Chewy who has compared the market, settled on an insurer from the CarePlus lineup, and likes one checkout. Skip it if you have not compared beyond the CarePlus shelf, because a small curated lineup answers a different question than a market-wide comparison. Pick the insurer first using the full reviews; use CarePlus, or the insurer's own site, only as the door.
Alternatives
Chewy vs the alternatives
- Lemonade is on the reported CarePlus lineup and quotes direct too: lowest price of our 11 in most runs, with app claims paid in minutes.
- Trupanion is the lineup's other reported name: unlimited benefit, a per-condition lifetime deductible, and the highest price on our list.
- Embrace sits outside the CarePlus shelf and rewards claim-free years: its Healthy Pet Deductible drops $50 each year you do not claim.
Leaving
How do you cancel Chewy (and what happens next)?
Cancelling a policy bought through CarePlus means cancelling with the issuing insurer, on that insurer's process, and state free-look rules give a full-refund window shortly after purchase. Line up replacement coverage before you cancel: a gap restarts waiting periods, and new symptoms during the gap become pre-existing with the next insurer. The safe sequence is in our guide to switching pet insurance without coverage gaps.
